George Edward Stewart April 28, 2019 George Edward Stewart, 94, passed away Sunday on his way home from working on his farm in Kirkville to his home in East Syracuse. George grew up in Kirkville, NY, where he went to school, worked as a farm hand and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. As a boy scout George won a regional fire starting competition using flint & steel and won a trip to New York City to compete with other boy scouts. He left school to join the Army Air Corp at 17, attended basic training in Miami Beach, FL; shipped out to Braintree England as a tail gunner with the 9th Army Division, where he flew missions over France and Germany in a B-26 Marauder until the end of the WWII. After the war he reenlisted as part of the military government and was stationed in France, where he learned to shave with champagne, Austria, where he learned to ski and Germany, where he learned compassion for the German people. After the war George returned to the Syracuse area and ran his own small businesses as a roofer and a furniture mover, worked for Carrier Corporation, Syracuse Cartage and Storage and Whitenberg Distributers. George retired in 1987, remained an active volunteer with the American Legion Post 359, the VFW Simon-Parise Post 9596, and the Bridgeport Rod and Gun Club where he was a founding member. He kept himself busy playing golf and darts, and helping his children, grandchildren and friends with numerous projects. George was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Olive Stewart, his sister, Hilda Aucelli and his wife Alice. George is survived by three children, Paul (Sue) Stewart of Vienna, VA, Brad Stewart of Bridgeport, NY, and Lori (John) Messina of East Syracuse; six Grandchildren, John, Jr. (Stacey) Messina, Jason (Stephany) Messina, Jeremy and Jessica Messina, and Cameron and Garrett Stewart; and three great-grandchildren, John III, Chiara, and Anthony Messina; and more than several nieces and nephews. George was active to the end. He kept busy helping others and visiting with his children and grandchildren. Friends and family will remember his generosity and optimism. He will be deeply missed by us all. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4-6 pm at Delaney Greabell Adydan Funeral Home, 241 Kinne Street, East Syracuse, followed by a brief prayer service.
